CJ Marra Cabinets & Carpentry · Materials & Craftsmanship
Premium Materials.
Crafted Without
Compromise.
Every exceptional project begins with exceptional materials. We carefully select quality sheet materials, solid timber, premium hardware and beautiful finishes to create bespoke cabinetry that combines outstanding craftsmanship with long-lasting performance.
Our Approach
Carefully Selected For Every Project
No two homes are the same, and neither are the materials we recommend.
Every project is individually designed, with materials chosen to suit your home, lifestyle, design preferences and budget. Whether we're creating a bespoke kitchen, fitted wardrobes or custom cabinetry, we carefully select materials that deliver exceptional durability, functionality and timeless style.
Our selection process considers moisture resistance, structural strength, surface quality, longevity and the precise demands of each application — ensuring every piece of furniture we create is built to perform beautifully for decades.

Engineering Excellence
Sheet Materials
The right engineered board is fundamental to cabinetry that looks flawless and lasts for decades. Material selection depends on moisture resistance, durability, structural strength, surface finish, budget and the intended application.
MDF
Medium Density Fibreboard
The premium choice for painted cabinetry. Takes a flawless spray finish better than any other material — smooth, stable and consistent.
MR MDF
Moisture Resistant MDF
Specifically engineered for areas with elevated humidity. Ideal for kitchen cabinets, bathroom vanities and utility rooms.
FR MDF
Fire Rated MDF
Meets fire retardancy standards for commercial environments and specialist residential applications where building regulations require it.
MFC
Melamine Faced Chipboard
The industry standard for cabinet carcasses. Durable, cost-effective and available in a wide range of colours and woodgrain prints.
Birch Ply
Birch Plywood
A premium choice for internal cabinet structures and drawer boxes — incredibly strong, stable and beautiful when left visible.
Plywood
Structural Plywood
Exceptional strength-to-weight ratio. Used where structural performance is critical, such as shelving, flooring and heavy-load applications.
Veneered MDF
Real Wood Veneer on MDF
Real timber veneer applied to a stable MDF core — delivering the natural warmth and beauty of solid wood with superior dimensional stability.
Veneered Ply
Real Wood Veneer on Plywood
Combines the structural strength of plywood with a genuine timber veneer surface — the highest specification panel option.
Chipboard
Particle Board
A cost-effective option for internal structures where appearance is secondary to function. Good compressive strength for shelving applications.
OSB
Oriented Strand Board
Excellent structural board commonly used in workshop builds, underlays and bespoke industrial-style cabinetry.
Hardboard
High Density Hardboard
Thin, smooth and flat — commonly used as cabinet backs and drawer bottoms where a neat, clean finish is required.
Material Selection Depends On:
Natural Beauty & Strength
Solid Timber
Solid timber is used for bespoke furniture, shelving, feature joinery, decorative details, doors and high-end cabinetry where natural beauty and strength are important. Every piece is carefully selected for grain, colour and character.

Oak
Europe & North America
The most popular hardwood in British joinery. Strong, durable and beautiful with an open grain that takes stains, oils and lacquers superbly.

Ash
Europe
Pale, creamy tones with a distinctive grain pattern. Exceptionally tough and flexible — ideal for doors, shelving and decorative joinery.

Walnut
North America & Europe
Rich, dark chocolate tones with a silky grain. One of the most luxurious timbers available — stunning for kitchen fronts, floating shelves and bespoke furniture.

Maple
North America
Hard, fine-grained and consistent in colour. Excellent for painted finishes or a subtle natural look. Highly durable in high-use applications.

Beech
Europe
A dense, close-grained hardwood with warm amber tones. Highly resistant to wear — ideal for kitchen interiors, shelving and work surfaces.

Tulipwood
North America
Pale cream to light green tones. Easy to work, takes paint beautifully and is an excellent sustainable choice for painted cabinetry and carcass work.

Pine
Europe & North America
Warm, natural tones with a characteristic knotted grain. Widely used in traditional and cottage-style cabinetry, furniture and decorative joinery.

Douglas Fir
North America
Strong, straight-grained timber with a warm reddish tone. Excellent for structural joinery, feature shelving and bespoke furniture where strength matters.

Finishes
Every finish is carefully chosen to complement each client's home and personal style. The right finish transforms a good piece of furniture into an extraordinary one.
Hand Painted
Applied by hand with exceptional skill and care. Each coat is individually applied and sanded to achieve a beautifully smooth, characterful finish that is unique to your project.
Spray Painted
A factory-quality spray finish applied in a controlled environment for a flawless, consistent surface. The benchmark for modern painted cabinetry.
Lacquered
A clear or tinted protective lacquer coat applied over timber or paint. Adds durability and sheen — ideal for high-use areas requiring both beauty and protection.
Oiled
Penetrating oil treatments nourish and protect solid timber, enhancing the natural grain and providing a warm, matte finish that deepens over time.
Waxed
Traditional wax finishes provide a beautiful, tactile surface with a subtle natural sheen. Particularly suited to solid oak, pine and reclaimed timber.
Veneered
Real wood veneer surfaces applied to engineered cores — delivering the warmth and character of natural timber with outstanding dimensional stability.
Natural Timber
The beauty of natural, unfinished or minimally treated solid timber. Allows the grain, character and warmth of the wood to speak for itself.
Traditional Craftsmanship
Joinery & Craftsmanship
Precision joinery creates furniture that is stronger, longer-lasting and beautifully crafted. We combine time-honoured woodworking techniques with modern tooling to achieve results that simply cannot be replicated by factory production.

Mortise & Tenon
One of the oldest and strongest woodworking joints. A tenon (projecting piece) fits into a mortise (cavity) to create an incredibly robust connection — used in frame construction and solid timber doors.
Dovetail Joints
The hallmark of fine craftsmanship. Interlocking wedge-shaped profiles create joints that are virtually impossible to pull apart — the traditional choice for drawer box construction.
Domino Joinery
Modern precision joinery using floating oval tenons for perfectly aligned, extremely strong joints. The contemporary craftsman's tool for accurate furniture assembly.
Biscuit Jointing
Compressed beech biscuits expand when glued to create a strong, aligned joint. Widely used for panel joining, edge-to-edge joints and cabinet assembly.
Pocket Hole Joinery
Fast, strong and clean. Angled screws driven through pre-drilled pockets create robust connections used in face frame construction and cabinet box assembly.
Tongue & Groove
A interlocking profile joint that allows panels to expand and contract naturally. Used in solid timber panelling, drawer bottoms, shaker doors and cladding.
Rebates
A stepped recess cut into the edge of a workpiece. Used to receive cabinet backs, glass panels and frames — creating a neat, recessed join without visible fixings.
Mitres
Angled cuts joined at a corner — creating a seamless, professional appearance. Used for architraves, skirting boards, cornice mouldings and decorative cabinet details.
